Styling
ideas for denim jeans
The humble
denim jean often gets overshadowed in fashion mags by images of fabulous ball
gowns or celebrities in bikinis. But there’s nothing to stop you taking denim
into the fashion stratosphere – all you need is some clever styling. The right
shoes, jacket or accessories will raise a pair of denims to chic status, and
you’ll be comfortable to boot.
Avoiding a
pitfall like lazily throwing on a nondescript T-shirt is key to making your
jeans work for you. Hoodie tops are also a big no-no, even if you pair your
ensemble with high heels. If you’re looking for some inspiration, Harper’s
Bazaar magazine has a gallery of celebrities who have got it right, managing to
look effortlessly chic while wearing nothing more daring than jeans and a great
pair of ankle boots.
Of course,
the Harper’s article focuses on models and actresses who have unlimited funds
to spend on designer goodies to up their denim glamour factor but there is no
need to work that hard. Go with an idea, then adapt it. For example, if you
like the look of January Jones in ankle-grazing indigo skinnies with stilettos
but cannot afford the Isabel Marant tunic, you can improvise. Find a chiffon
blouse, with or without a pussy bow neckline, for a similarly chic smart casual
look. Team with a hand-held tote to complete the look.
Matching a
pair of jeans with a smart blazer is an easy way to add a bit of formality and
structure to your denim styling. A graphic T-shirt here could look relaxed and
bohemian, while a ruffled blouse à la Kate Middleton would look quite smart. Go
for an oversized blazer if you want the androgynous
‘I’ve-just-nicked-this-off-my-boyfriend’ look, or a neat tailored version for
classic chic.
During the
day, ankle boots are a real celebrity favourite, whether you’re going for
skinny, straight, flared or bootcut jeans. They’re so practical for winter, and
add a bit of height to your outfit. For a more equestrian look, team skinnies
with knee-high or even over-the-knee boots: this looks fab but will also keep
your legs warm in these chillier months.
